Volunteer Leadership – An Exciting Journey Ahead

Happy New Year! 2015 is off to a great start!

This week, I had the honor of being installed as President of the Apartment Association of Orange County.  Going on my sixth year as a board member and my seventh year of active involvement with the association, this marks the beginning of a new chapter for both the association and I. Growing up, from the time I was 9 years old, I was involved with the apartment business and thanks to my dad this was the family business.  As I grew up, my dad grew his company and I was able to learn the business firsthand and from the ground up.  I am pictured above taking my oath with Assemblyman Don Wagner.

I started as a porter, graduated to maintenance tech, then to maintenance lead before switching gears from maintenance to operations as I started in College.  From there, I began the climb from leasing agent to assistant manager to manager, as I also worked to get my degree, obtain my broker license and begin working on the investment and acquisition side of the business.  This ground-up experience gave me the opportunity to learn the business from all angles, and my work on the management side made me more valuable on the investment side and vice-versa.  Without my dad, I would not have had this opportunity.  We are pictured below.

While the apartment business has changed quite a bit since my dad first started out some 38 years ago, the fundamentals are still the same.  Relationships, business principles and investment fundamentals are all the same on our side and landlords are still vilified by the media and still under constant attack by legislators and thus, the need for the apartment association also remains unchanged.

I look forward to chronicling the journey, highlighting the fun times, the trying times, the successes and more.  I hope to showcase the people who work diligently behind-the-scenes and on the front-lines in order to make our industry thrive.  Hopefully, I will inspire you to take the time out of your day to give back to a cause near and dear to your heart.
